English Courses Using Different Types of Traditional English Language Learning Ways

Before multimedia was incorporated to English courses, traditional methods in teaching English were the only ways in terms of learning a second language. Various milestones have been achieved over the years leading to multimedia teaching – a modernized method that utilizes communication, grammar structure, and syntax to make learning English a lot more easier and more interactive. In this article however, we will tackle the traditional approaches to teaching and learning English.

Grammar Translation

The earliest method known to teach a second language relied solely on converting foreign texts to English. This model was widely used back in the 17th-19th centuries, neglecting the fact that oral communication is vital in English courses. Although important in learning nouns, adjectives, verbs, prepositions, and the like, the lack of application made Grammar Translation rather a weak technique.

Audio-Lingual

Audio-lingual in a way is self explanatory. This method was used in attempt to focus on the verbal aspect of learning. Rather than understanding the structure of the English language, the Audio-Lingual method focuses on repetitive drills. Mimicking the intonation and common phrases in English was an important principle of the method, with little explanation of context and grammar.

Direct Method

The Direct method uses the idea of learning a second language the same as learning the first language. Oral learning process is vital and students are introduced in an environment where English is widely spoken in order to adapt the language. This was effective until the grammatical analysis was raised, the lacking element in this method.

Communicative

Focused on using English at the very first day of training, the Communicative method has become a popular way in teaching English in the modern era. English courses in various parts of the globe encourage students to speak the language, unmindful of grammar and syntax, only to correct it if the learner starts to get comfortable of the language.
