The Problem with English Language Mistakes in Email Writing

Making an English language mistake in email writing is common but comes with serious consequences. In main, it harms the reader’s opinion of the writer, but in extreme cases, it can change the meaning of the email as well.

As a result, people should strive to avoid making English language mistakes as much as possible by taking some English courses in Singapore to improve one’s language if necessary.

Here are the 5 Common Mistakes in Email Writing

  1. Forgetting Greeting or Closing– though emails are digital and are often less formal than physical written letters, they are still letters and formalities like greetings and closings are still needed.
  2. Misuse of I and Me– when using the words I and Me agreement is a big issue. As a general rule, when speaking of yourself and others, remove the other party to see if the sentence still makes sense to decide if you should use Me or I.
  3. Your and You’re– though contractions are often discouraged in formal writing, in many cases those composing emails do so quickly and auto correct or a lack of time can end up in the improper use of these two homophones as well as many others.
  4. Could/Would/Should Of– often times people depend wholly on their own hearing and phonetics to spell and sound out words. While this is not necessarily a bad thing, it can end up in mistakes with words like should of which should really be should have. If you are using phonetics, it is always best to compose in a word processor first.
  5. To/Two/Too– this is again a commonly mistaken homophone. All three are actual words so your spell check is not going to catch them. Taking and English Course in Singapore helps.
