A Visual Learner’s Guide To Becoming Proficient In English

By definition, a visual learner is a person who learns more effectively using visual elements compared to aural, verbal, physical, and other learning styles. These are the people who learn best by seeing something, remembering it, and then associating a concept with it.

To maximise your learning, it is wise to understand your learning style and use it to boost your English class in Singapore! Read on for some helpful tips to get you started:

1. Get creative and make infographics

As a visual learner, you are probably a very creative person because creativity stimulates your sense of sight. With that taken into consideration, go get your notes and make creative infographics or flashcards about English grammar.

Studies have shown that about 90% of the information that the brain receives is purely visual. Also, visuals are better sources because you are more likely to process it 60,000x faster than you would with texts. So, start prepping your cards and stick them onto the walls inside of your room to help you with the memorisation of difficult words or concepts!

2. Make use of the internet

Because the internet houses more information than what the average person could fathom, it makes for a great source of visual learning materials. Websites such as Pinterest have different kinds of pictures that are tailored to either educate or inspire you. While the website isn’t necessarily targeted at English speakers, you can definitely find a bunch of relevant infographics that appeal to you.

Google Images is also an effective alternative to help you learn more English terminologies. This is especially helpful when trying to broaden your vocabulary – try typing a term you wish to learn more about and you’ll be presented with a list of images and words associated with it!

3. Watch online videos

As mentioned, the internet is a great knowledge resource for visual learners. Aside from those previously mentioned, you can also try watching short movies on YouTube so you can not only take in visual elements but also improve upon your English listening skills.

Alternatively, you can also try watching vlogs or online tutorials about English grammar or pronunciation to supplement your English classes. Just make sure you utilise reliable and credible sources!

4. Read blogs and try copying it

Not for publishing purposes, of course. Reading online blogs about random topics helps to give you an idea about how English speakers organise and frame their thoughts into writing, as well as different tones and styles of writing. Reading is also a great way to learn idioms and get a feel of how to apply them to your own writing. Just be sure that you are doing this solely for practice purposes so you wouldn’t get in trouble.

5. Be consistent with your English class

When you sign up for an English course in Singapore, see to it that you are consistent with your lessons. This is because a large part of getting to grips with a new language is consistency and perseverance.
