Academic and General Training

IELTS is offered in two formats – Academic and General Training.

The Academic tests assess a candidate’s ability to study or train at a tertiary and undergraduate level or higher in the medium of English. Academic registrations and admissions are based on the IELTS tests results.

The General Training tests are suitable for a candidate who is heading to English-speaking countries for work experience, training programs or secondary education. The test will focus on basic survival skills in the workplace and social context. It is also a requirement for migration to the UK, Canada, Australia and New Zealand.

Academic and General Training tests differ in context, content and purpose of the tasks, but reporting of scores and time allocation remains the same.

Candidates should and is responsible for informing the test administration centre on their choice of the test in Academic or General Training. Please check with the relevant centres as not all offer the General Training test.

IELTS Test Format

Candidates are assessed in these critical areas: writing, reading, listening and speaking. These cover a comprehensive range of abilities in the English language and is scored on a nine-point scale. Regardless of Academic and General Training, all candidates will take the same Speaking and Listening tests. However, for the Reading and Writing test components, the subject matter differs depending on the difficulty you take.

The first three tests – Writing, Reading, Listening – are to be completed in one day with no breaks in between. The Speaking test component can be done, at the discretion of the test centre, a week before or after completing the other tests.

The entire test time is approximately 3 hours.
