Eight Tips On How You Can Improve Your Spoken English

Four key factors play a role when it comes to mastering English: Writing, Listening, Reading and, the most daunting, Speaking.

Speaking English fluently as a non-native learner can be extremely challenging, especially for an adult. The best time to actually learn is to start early and have English lessons for kids when you are a child.

Here are eight tips on how you can improve your spoken English in no time:

Practice makes perfect

If your English course in Singapore is taught by a native English speaker, it’s good to approach them. Try and start a conversation, even if it’s just a routine greeting.

This will definitely help boost your confidence, and you will be surprised by how eager English speakers are when it comes to chatting. Don’t worry about whether you’re using the correct grammar and just go for it!

You can also practice with your friends and family if that is more comfortable.

Read aloud

Get your hands on a popular English book series like the Harry Potter or Twilight series. Find a quiet place where you won’t disturb anyone, like your room, and read them aloud.

Practising the pronunciation of words is equally important when practising spelling. You could even record yourself and listen back to how your spoken English sounds like.

Broaden your vocabulary

Write down at least ten words, every day. You can write words in English based on things you usually say in your native language.

Make sentences with each of these words for practice. Take note of them and regularly use them in your English classes in Singapore.

Have a goal in mind

Work towards something, like signing up for and excelling in an IELTS test.

Set short term and long-term goals for yourself and make sure to attain them.

Short term goals could include just holding any conversation with your teacher in Singapore during English lessons.  Long-term goals though could consist of signing up and taking a written English exam.

Sing along

Listen to famous English songs, search for their lyrics and sing along to them.

Listening to music is one of the easiest ways to learn. Pick up words and easily recognize their similar use during conversations.

Challenge yourself and try memorizing a difficult rap song!

Use more adverbs and adjectives

Try incorporating descriptive words and use them to express yourself.

Avoid using simple adjectives like ‘good’ and ‘bad’. Instead, replace those simpler terms with more descriptive words like ‘wonderful’ and ‘awful’. For time adverbs, words you can use instead are ‘usually’ and ‘regularly.’

Ask questions

Formulate question by using the four ‘W’: Who, What, Where and When.  Use them when you practice English to hold longer conversations.

Don’t forget to ask other questions, like those that start with “do” and “does” as well.

Think in English

Get to a point where you will start thinking in English and won’t need to translate everything beforehand in your mind. Before you know it, you’ll be fluent in conversing in English.

Following only a few of these steps can improve your English fluency drastically. Have the confidence to carry a conversation in English, and it will be satisfying when you see progress during your lessons in English courses in Singapore and in social situations.
