How Does One’s Brain Take up a New Language

Communication is an essential part of how humans to coexist in harmony and forge relationships with each other.

Language gives us a common avenue for communication. Your parents and birthplace dictate which language you speak; hence becoming your mother tongue. The human brain is more powerful than any computer, and learning a language is just the tip of the iceberg, while it also handles many concurrent calculations. In this piece, we will take a look at how the brain learns new languages.

Listening
When you were a baby, you did not know how to speak, read or write, but somehow you found that you were able to communicate in a specific language. The reason you learnt your mother tongue is that you were brought up in a home that spoke that language. You picked up your mother tongue by hearing it over and over again.

The human brain can learn complex ideas and concepts through repetition. That is why you can learn a language or memorise something simply by listening to an audiobook frequently. Even when in class, you learn by listening to the teacher.

Writing
Unfortunately, infants cannot write down things they see, they have to rely on their auditory and optical ability to learn new stuff. However, once you develop and learn to read and write, you can begin penning down what you see. Many students in Singapore learn English in classes where they have to write down what they learn.

When you write something down, your brain will better record it because you’re learning on multiple levels; that’s why you are encouraged to take notes while in school. As you learn a language, you can write down phrases and words as you learn. This way, they will be a lot harder to forget.

Reading
Reading has been known not only to improve the brains capabilities, but it also improves your ability to remember whatever you have learnt.

If you want to learn a new language, try and get a dictionary from that language to one that you are more familiar with, for example, a Spanish to English translation or vice versa. You can get yourself simple storybooks as you develop your understanding, preferably one with pictures. Your brain will remember better if it associates words with a specific image.

Music
Honestly speaking, how many songs have you memorised word for word? Many, right? That is because you have listened to the song over and over, and your brain has grown accustomed to the words. This is how you learn new phrases.
If you are learning a new language, look for a playlist online for songs in that language. Look for the translations of the lyrics and understand them. Once you’ve mastered how the song goes and the translation of the words, your brain will relate the two, and in turn, learn new phrases in the process.

Television
TV shows are an excellent way to learn a language. Children can learn language through cartoons and kid shows, some of which have songs that teach pronunciation of words and how to correctly construct sentences. Adults also can learn how to communicate in a new language. You can search for television shows in the vocabulary you’re learning and find subtitles and wean yourself from the subtitles as time goes.

Being bi-lingual is very important in today’s world, simply because it can open up numerous opportunities for you to advance in life. Apart from the opportunities, your cognitive abilities will also be tremendously improved. So do not be afraid of the difficulty in learning, take up english courses in singapore and use the above means to learn faster and more efficiently.
