Things You Might Not Have Known About the English Language!

There are so many facts and things that I am sure you are not aware of the English language. It is one language that is recognised all over the world. This article points out 4 things about the language that you are not aware of:

It is the sole language without an institution to guide
All the other major languages like French and Spanish have a proper academy to support it or guide the language. Did you know there are political reasons for doing so? In the previous years, academies were introduced to guide the language, but, they broke off a while later due to the lack of public and political support. However, presently, South Africa is the only English speaking country that has an academy. The problem of building an academy at the present moment is that the English language has become so vast and universal without any guidance, we can’t see an academy opening any time soon. And even if it opens, where will it be located? There are so many English speaking countries!

About 1 billion people are learning the language as you sit here reading this!
Yes! You read that right. According to the British council, back in 2000, about 1 billion people were learning the English language. Considering that it is 2018 now, expect the number to be quite high now.

Most of the English words are from the German origin
If we look into the numbers, then out of 100 most commonly used words in English, almost about 96 of them are from the German origin. Surprised to read this? And among these words, the most common types are the ones that make sense to sentence, words that make communication work. Some of the words are; you, go, ear, I and similar words. In fact, most of the English words in the past were developed and originated from the Germanic words. Although, if we compare the language now from the past, so much of it has changed, however, the basic words are still the same.

But, that’s not all! After 1066 most English language words are from the Latin origins
English is a complicated language, and most of the words have been originated either from Germanic or Latin origin. The rebirth of the language started in Italy, slowly it spread its wings to England through France, and this called in for a new vocabulary. New ideas were discovered again, and the problem that started here was, that these words could not be explained in English. This is the reason why the language had to adopt from the Latin origin.

The word ‘girl’ was not gender specific
Although now, the girl is used to refer young females, however, in the past, a girl meant a young child. If the male was to differentiate from the female than males were called knave girls, and the latter was called gay girls.
